Tips and Drills

Exaggeration Drill - Chipping

Poor distance control on your chips? Try this drill!

When practicing your chipping, pick out your landing spot and start out hitting three different shots. First, focus on your landing spot and then hit a chip that lands well past your original landing spot (overexaggerate it). Next, hit a chip that lands well short of your original landing spot (overexaggerate landing it short). At this point you should notice that its not that hard to land it past or short of your landing zone...you basically just make one swing that is way too long and one that is way too short. Now you just need to find the right length of swing to land your chips in your landing zone. If you fly it past your landing spot, you should  end up past the cup. If you land it short of your spot, you should come up short of the cup. This will start to develop your sense of touch and feel.

12" Party Balloon Drill

Sync up your arm swing with your body rotation for better contact.

Address a golf ball and hold the inflated balloon between your forearms. Make a 3/4 or 1/2 swing, keeping the balloon between the forearms and the handle leading the clubhead. If your arms swing past your body or the clubhead passes the handle, the balloon will fall out.

3-Ball Drill

Slicing or hooking? Try this!

One of my favorite drills works for both the slicer and hooker. For the slicer, you have to change your out-to-in clubhead path and open clubface. To do this, set a ball on your intended target line and then place another ball a couple of inches behind and to the outside of the original ball. Then place the third ball a couple of inches in front of and to the inside of the original. The only way to avoid hitting the outter two is to make a swing that is in-to-out. Set up to the middle ball and make a swing without hitting the other two. This will give you the feeling of the in-to-out swing you need to start hitting a draw.

To stop hooking, you need to change your in-to-out path and closed clubface. Simply set up the three balls to where you must swing out-to-in in order to avoid hitting the outter two.

...More to come!
